Václav Havel passed away on December 18, 2011 at the age of 75. As the last Czechoslovak President (1989-1992) and the first President of the Czech Republic (1993-2003), Havel served as a leading political figure in the Czech Republic as well as a symbol for the protection of human rights and democracy. Havel was one of the leading dissidents of the Velvet Revolution (which brought the communist regime in Czechoslovakia to an end in 1989). He was also a founding member and architect of Charter 77, which celebrates its 35th anniversary on the day of his memorial tribute.

Václav Havel had long term contacts with South Korea and regularly commented on the situation in North Korea. He repeatedly criticized the North Korean government for holding people without due process of law for arbitrary reasons in political prison camps as well as for committing crimes against humanity against its own people. He was seen as one of the most prominent vocal critics of North Korea amongst world leaders.

Havels life-long dedication to human liberties is demonstrated by his support for oppressed people and dissidents movements around the world. We hope you will join us in honoring his legacy.
