NOW WE KNOW: Final Call for Action at the UN Human Rights Council following presentation of COI report on DPRK
Citizens’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights (NKHR), in partnership with Conectas Human Rights (Brazil), will make a joint statement during the dialogue with the COI. We will remind the Council that “ensuring accountability for the crimes against humanity committed in the DPRK is the proper response by the members of the UN Human Rights Council to address the ongoing and grave human rights violations committed by another member of the UN system.”
Following the official interactions on the same day, NKHR with several partner organizations will hold a special event at the Human Rights Council (18:15 Geneva time/ 02:15 Seoul time) where victims of human rights abuses in North Korea will appeal to the international community to call for justice. The event will include statements from Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Shin Dong-hyuk, as well as a recital by a North Korean pianist who escaped in 2003. Families of victims of abduction will come from Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Romania and the US to appeal to the international community for help.
“Crimes committed in North Korea are a challenge to the very foundations of the UN system” said Joanna Hosaniak, Deputy Director of NKHR, adding that “If the UN member states and UN bodies do not address them effectively right now, it will show North Korea that crimes may continue, and the UN will not be able to prevent further suffering of many victims remaining in North Korea”.
